The Demise of DMZ: Call of Duty’s Failed Experiment in Extraction Shooters

Infinity Ward Confirms the End of DMZ After Just One Year Online

In a surprising announcement, Infinity Ward has confirmed that DMZ, Call of Duty’s attempt at an extraction shooter, will no longer receive updates and will be kept on life support. Released alongside Warzone 2.0 in November 2022, DMZ failed to capture the attention of players and will now remain accessible only through Warzone, without any new content or updates. This marks the end of Infinity Ward’s short-lived experiment with DMZ.

The Future of DMZ:

In a recent blog post, Infinity Ward revealed that DMZ will continue to be playable on old maps, but it will not be ported into Urzikstan. The decision was made because this year’s COD Zombies offering effectively serves as a DMZ mode, but with a twist. Instead of battling other players, players are tasked with slaying hordes of bloodthirsty, undead creatures.

The blog post stated that DMZ will not be available or directly interact with Modern Warfare III or Call of Duty: Warzone. This means that progression, as well as any new content such as Battle Pass or store bundles, will not carry over to DMZ. Additionally, DMZ progress will not apply to new Battle Passes starting from Season 1.

The Slow Winding Down:

With the confirmation that DMZ will no longer receive updates, it is expected that the mode will gradually be phased out. As the lifecycle of Modern Warfare III progresses, DMZ will likely be shut down permanently, bringing an end to Infinity Ward’s experiment. Despite offering entertainment to some players, DMZ failed to capitalize on the growing popularity of the extraction shooter genre, which has been dominated by games like Escape From Tarkov.

Conclusion:

The demise of DMZ highlights the challenges faced by game developers in creating successful experimental modes within established franchises. While DMZ provided some entertainment for players, it ultimately failed to capture the attention and popularity necessary to sustain its lifespan. As Infinity Ward moves forward, players will have to bid farewell to DMZ and look to other modes and experiences within the Call of Duty universe.
