Unfortunate Displays of Pettiness and Partisanship Undermine Conservative Party’s Bid for Government
As the official opposition in the House of Commons, the Conservative Party and its leader, Pierre Poilievre, have a crucial role in auditioning for the job of government. However, recent actions by the party have cast doubt on their ability to demonstrate the judgment and temperament required to run a G7 nation. From a misguided vote against the Canada-Ukraine free-trade agreement to partisan rhetoric in the wake of a potential security threat, the Conservatives have shown themselves to be petty, partisan, and disingenuous.
Unanimous Vote Against Canada-Ukraine Free-Trade Agreement
In a particularly egregious display, the Conservative Party unanimously voted against the enabling legislation for an updated Canada-Ukraine free-trade agreement. The sticking point for Poilievre was a clause that called for the promotion of carbon pricing and measures to mitigate carbon leakage risks. However, Poilievre falsely portrayed this clause as a mandate for Ukraine to adopt a carbon tax similar to Canada’s. The agreement, in fact, does not impose such a requirement on Ukraine, as confirmed by the Ukraine embassy. By opposing the agreement, the Conservatives missed an opportunity to support Ukraine in its time of great need.
Lack of Maturity in Response to Security Incident
Poilievre also failed to demonstrate the maturity and experience needed for running a country when he addressed a question in the House of Commons following a potential terror attack at the Rainbow International Bridge in Niagara Falls, New York. Regardless of the timing of his statement, Poilievre immediately veered into partisanship, using his party’s slogan to demand an update on the Prime Minister’s action plan. This was a moment when politicians should have been working to calm the public, rather than exploiting the possibility of a worst-case scenario.
Irresponsible Behavior on Social Media
Another instance that raises concerns about the Conservative Party’s readiness for leadership was Conservative MP Andrew Scheer’s decision to publish the personal information of a senator who had voted against a Conservative private member’s bill. This action led to the senator facing online racist abuse and receiving a threatening phone call, forcing her to leave her home. Such behavior reflects poorly on the party’s judgment and ability to handle sensitive situations responsibly.
