This international biotech entrepreneur, who hails from the Middle East, has made a name for herself in the world of business and innovation. Now, she is using her expertise to encourage students at the University of Wyoming to build new businesses and drive economic development in the state. Shihab’s journey from the Middle East to Wyoming is a tale of perseverance, risk-taking, and a relentless pursuit of her passions.
Palestine and Jordan:
Born in Bethlehem and raised in Ramallah, Shihab grew up in a region marked by military conflict and instability. Despite having a supportive and loving family, she felt the need to leave her home country to pursue her dreams. At the age of 18, she had the opportunity to continue her education in Jordan. Although she had wanted to study journalism, she followed her family’s wishes and pursued a career in medicine. Shihab earned a degree in laboratory medicine and went on to work for an international biotech company based in Denmark.
Entrepreneurship in the Middle East:
In her 30s, Shihab realized that she wanted to start something of her own in the Arab region. She earned an MBA from the London Institute and embarked on a journey to create a successful research and development company in Jordan. Despite facing numerous challenges, including a lack of regulations and initial research setbacks, Shihab persevered. She teamed up with scientists and worked with the government to attract investors and promote her cancer research. Eventually, her company, MonoJo Biotech, found success by developing unique antibodies from camels and creating a popular acne-fighting skin cream.
International Recognition and Expansion:
Shihab’s entrepreneurial endeavors gained international recognition, earning her a spot among the most influential Arabs in the world. Her company, MonoJo Biotech, expanded its presence internationally, including in the United States. However, in 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the company’s sales, and Shihab decided to step away to take care of her father, who had developed cancer. It was during this time that she learned about an opportunity in Wyoming.
Coming to Wyoming:
Motivated by UW President Ed Seidel’s vision to bolster entrepreneurship at the university, Shihab made the bold decision to move to Wyoming. Initially, she advised the president on COVID-19 and raised awareness about the virus on campus. However, she soon realized that her true passion lay in fostering entrepreneurship among students. Shihab now leads the University of Wyoming Center of Entrepreneurship and Innovation, where she connects students, faculty, business owners, and state leaders to strengthen the entrepreneurship ecosystem in Wyoming.
