Tales of Trails: A Thanksgiving Hike in Moab’s Fisher Towers

Exploring the Adventurous Side of Moab’s Famous Hiking Destination

Thanksgiving Day in Moab’s Fisher Towers turned out to be anything but a serene and contemplative hike for the author and their friend, Joe. Expecting a quintessential Moab adventure with impressive rocks and breathtaking views, they instead found themselves immersed in the world of adventure sports. From powered parachuters buzzing overhead to rock climbers scaling dramatic towers and base jumpers soaring through the sky, Fisher Towers offered a thrilling and unexpected primer in extreme outdoor activities.

A Change of Plans and a Head Cold

Joe, visiting from New Orleans, arrived with a 2023 Toyota Tacoma rental car and a head cold, dashing the plans for a long trek in the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park. However, Moab’s abundance of nearby, less strenuous hikes provided an opportunity for a true southeast Utah adventure. Armed with Dayquil to ward off cold symptoms, they embarked on a 2.2-mile trail to witness the famous Cutler and Moenkopi sandstone towers.

Towering Architecture and Unexpected Sightings

The towers, viewed from below, evoked a unique blend of gothic architecture and New York brownstone apartments. As they began their hike towards Cottontail Tower, they were greeted by the sight of powered parachutes taking off and soaring above the Dome Plateau. Despite the buzzing overhead, they pressed on and soon encountered a family marveling at a figure perched on Ancient Art tower. Moments later, the jumper gracefully descended with a parachute, landing delicately on the trail below.

Surrounded by Adventure

As they ascended further, the hikers found themselves surrounded by adventure enthusiasts. Rock climbers scaled intricate towers, their voices echoing through the canyon. Extended families on holiday hikes and dogs leading the way added to the lively atmosphere. The trail, a mix of dirt, rock, and fun obstacles like ladders and steep sandstone, always offered sweeping views of the towering structures and Castleton Tower in the distance.

A Rewarding Summit and Unexpected Aerial Spectacles

Reaching the top, the hikers settled down to take in the stunning view and savor the fruits of their uphill climb. However, their peaceful moment was interrupted by the sound of a helicopter circling above. Landing on a flat rock surface hundreds of feet in the air, the helicopter seemed to disgorge passengers, leaving the author skeptical. Their skepticism vanished when a wingsuit diver dived towards the earth at a steep angle, disappearing behind a tower and reappearing as a tiny dot in the sky.

Conclusion:

While Fisher Towers did not offer the serene and meditative hike the author had anticipated, it provided a true Moab adventure filled with ancient rocks, sweeping views, and exposure to the spirit of adventure sports. The proximity to high-risk activities in Moab inspires not only because the author may partake in them but because they feel within reach, reminding us that if these daring feats are possible, so are many other extraordinary endeavors.
