Bengaluru’s Airport Implements CTX Machine for Enhanced Screening
Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) in Bengaluru has unveiled a new security procedure that aims to enhance the passenger experience by eliminating the need for removing laptops, tablets, and other electronic devices from handbags during security screenings. This change comes as part of the airport’s efforts to streamline the security process and provide a more efficient and convenient journey for travelers. The of the CTX (Computer Tomography X-ray) machine at Terminal 2 (T2) is set to revolutionize the security screening process, making KIA the first airport in India to implement this advanced technology.

The trial run for the CTX machine at T2 is set to commence within the next few weeks, marking a significant milestone for KIA. Satyaki Raghunath, Chief Operating Officer of Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL), stated that the new system will be integrated with the Automatic Tray Retrieval System (ATRS) and full-body scanners, providing a comprehensive security screening process.
Improved Efficiency and Convenience:
By integrating the CTX machine with the ATRS and full-body scanners, KIA aims to reduce the number of re-checks and physical inspections required during security screenings. This means that passengers will no longer need to remove electronic items, liquids, aerosols, and gels from their bags, resulting in a faster and more streamlined screening process. Additionally, the new system will require fewer trays per person, speeding up the divesting process and reducing contact points, thus improving hygiene.

The CTX machine utilizes advanced screening technology, including Computer Tomography (CT) and automatic explosives detection algorithms. This enables superior 3D image quality, allowing operators to rotate the view and examine the contents of bags more thoroughly. The CT technology also enhances the identification of liquid densities, further enhancing security outcomes.
Terminal 2: A Sustainable and Innovative Design:
Terminal 2 of Kempegowda International Airport is known for its unique design, resembling a “terminal in a garden.” It incorporates numerous green spaces and sustainable features, providing a pleasant and environmentally friendly environment for passengers. T2 was inaugurated in November 2022 and commenced domestic operations on January 15, 2023, with international flight operations beginning on September 12, 2023.

While KIA takes the lead in implementing the CTX machine integrated with ATRS and full-body scanners, Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) has conducted trial runs of the CTX machine for baggage screening. However, IGIA has not yet conducted passenger trials for this advanced system. KIA’s proactive approach to enhancing security and passenger experience sets it apart from other airports in India.
