USDA and President Biden announce investments to strengthen American food and agriculture supply chains

In a move to bolster American food and agriculture supply chains, President Biden and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Tom Vilsack have announced a $196 million investment. The funding aims to create new market opportunities for agricultural producers and entrepreneurs, expand domestic food processing capacity, and lower food costs. Merchant’s Garden LLC in Arizona will use a $250,000 Value-Added Producer Grant to expand marketing and sales of prepackaged salad mixes, becoming a local supplier of organic leafy greens. Lot 279, LLC in Nebraska will use a Value-Added Producer Grant to process and market direct-to-consumer beef cuts, increasing revenue and expanding their customer base.

Supporting Rural Businesses and Economic Development

The USDA is utilizing six programs to make these investments and create economic opportunities in rural areas. The Rural Business Development Grants provide technical assistance and training for small rural businesses, while the Value Added Producer Grants help farmers and ranchers venture into new markets by adding value to their products. Business and Industry Loan Guarantees increase access to business capital for eligible rural businesses, and the Food Supply Chain Guaranteed Loan Program supports investments in infrastructure for food processing and distribution. The Rural Economic Development Loan and Grant Program provides funding for rural projects, and USDA Rural Development offers loans, loan guarantees, and grants to expand economic opportunities and improve the quality of life in rural areas.
