UNCW Researchers Receive Grant to Study Climate Change Impact on Crabeater Seals in Antarctica

Grant from the Marine Mammal Commission supports research on the physiological effects of climate change on crabeater seals in Antarctica

Researchers from the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) have been awarded a significant grant of nearly $60,000 to investigate the physiological impacts of climate change on crabeater seals in Antarctica. The grant, provided by the Marine Mammal Commission, will support the research efforts led by UNCW Assistant Professor of Biology and Marine Biology, Michael Tift, and carried out by Ph.D. student Anna Pearson. The study aims to shed light on how sea ice loss, changes in prey availability, and other factors are affecting the health and well-being of these seals in their rapidly changing environment.

Investigating the Effects of Climate Change on Crabeater Seals

Crabeater seals, native to Antarctica, rely heavily on Antarctic krill as their primary food source. However, the abundance of krill has been steadily decreasing over the past few decades due to the combined effects of sea ice loss and krill fishing. This decline in their main food source poses a significant threat to the survival and overall health of the crabeater seal population. To better understand the physiological impacts of these changes, the UNCW researchers will examine how stress and reproductive hormones have evolved in crabeater seals over time.

Utilizing a Long-Term Dataset

These samples, including teeth collected from the 1950s-90s and whisker samples from seals collected in 2007, 2022, and 2023, will provide a unique opportunity to assess the long-term trends in stress and reproductive hormone levels in these seals. By comparing the hormone levels in historical samples to those from recent years, the researchers hope to identify any significant changes that may be attributed to climate change.

Developing a Novel Method for Hormone Analysis

One of the key challenges in this research is developing a method to measure stress and reproductive hormones in historical samples. To overcome this obstacle, the UNCW team plans to employ a novel approach using crabeater seal teeth and whisker samples. This innovative technique will not only enable the researchers to analyze the hormone levels in these samples but also foster collaborations with the British Antarctic Survey. Pearson will be traveling to the UK to initiate these hormone analyses, further expanding the scope and impact of the research.
