University of Michigan-Flint Receives $30 Million to Build Innovation & Technology Complex

State funding paves the way for the creation of a cutting-edge facility to support STEM education and foster innovation.

The University of Michigan-Flint has secured a $30 million commitment from the Michigan legislature to construct an innovation & technology complex. This state-of-the-art facility aims to support the university’s existing STEM programs and upcoming academic degrees in fields such as artificial intelligence, smart manufacturing, human-centered design, and electrical & computer engineering. Phase Two: Expansion and Growth

The second phase of the innovation & technology complex, costing $40 million, will consist of approximately 50,000 square feet of space adjacent to phase one. The $30 million funding from the Michigan legislature will be allocated towards this construction phase. This expansion will accommodate the anticipated growth of the CIT and further enhance the university’s ability to meet the programmatic needs of its students. With this additional space, UM-Flint aims to foster research, innovation, and collaboration between faculty, students, and industry partners throughout Michigan.

Advocacy and Future Programming

UM-Flint’s formal advocacy for the project began in October 2022 with the submission of an official request to the State Budget Office. In April 2023, university officials testified about the project’s necessity to the Joint Capital Outlay Subcommittee of the State Legislature. The CIT, established during the pandemic, has already made significant strides in providing degree programs in high-demand fields such as cybersecurity, software engineering, machining & automation, and sustainable & renewable energy. The new complex will enable the expansion of these programs and the addition of future offerings, including artificial intelligence, smart manufacturing, human-centered design, and electrical & computer engineering.
