Southern California’s Top Schools Compete in Back-to-Back Shows
The Interscholastic Equestrian League (IEL) Season recently commenced with a thrilling start at the Hansen Dam Horse Park in Southern California. This prestigious event brought together nearly 200 public and private middle school and secondary schools from the region. With a change in format this year, the IEL Season will feature a total of six shows instead of the usual four. The LCHS Equestrian Team, comprising select members from La Cañada High School, showcased their skills and passion for equestrian sports, leaving a lasting impression on the opening weekend.
LCHS Equestrian Team’s Strong Showing
The LCHS Equestrian Team, consisting of 18 talented riders, represented their school at the IEL Season kickoff. Seven riders from LCHS participated in various categories, including Jumping, Hunters, Equitation, and Dressage. The team’s performance throughout the weekend was commendable, with several riders achieving notable results.
Halloween-Themed Success
Senior Elle Rohs made a memorable Halloween-themed return to the IEL Season. She dressed her horse, Freddie, as Sven from the movie “Frozen,” while she transformed into Olaf. Rohs secured an impressive sixth place in the freshman class of Handy Hunters, outperforming more than 50 riders.
Impressive Freshman Performances
Caroline Crastz, another freshman rider, made a strong impression in two different categories. She secured a fifth-place finish in Equitation Over Fences and an eleventh-place finish in Working Hunter. Crastz’s performances showcased her talent and potential in the highly competitive freshman class.
Junior Jumper Varsity Success
Junior Kaylee Thornburgh displayed her skills in the Junior Jumper Varsity courses, earning third, fourth, and twelfth place finishes over the two-day competition. Riding her horse Fidelio, Thornburgh conquered jumps measuring 3 feet and 3 inches in height, demonstrating her expertise and determination.
Novice Class Triumphs
In the Novice Class, LCHS riders continued to make their mark. Eighth grader Chloe Calix secured an eighth-place finish in Equitation Flat, while freshman Aditi Iyer earned a commendable twelfth place in Working Hunter. Additionally, new rider Evelin Wade, also an eighth grader, showcased her grit and composure during her first appearance at the IEL Season.
Young Talent Shines
Representing the youngest members of the team, seventh grader Katelyn Holford participated in Dressage. Holford’s exceptional performance earned her a second-place finish in the Training Level No. 3 Test in Show No. 1. Dressed in a Winnie the Pooh onesie, she also secured a fourth-place finish in the Training Level No. 2 Test in Show No. 2, adding a touch of Halloween spirit to her achievement.
