LCHS Equestrian Team Shines at Interscholastic Equestrian League Season Opener

Competitors from Southern California schools gather for a thrilling weekend of equestrian competitions

The Interscholastic Equestrian League Season recently commenced with a thrilling start at the Hansen Dam Horse Park on October 28-29. This highly anticipated event brought together nearly 200 public and private middle school and secondary schools from the Southern California region. With a change in format this year, the season will consist of six shows instead of the usual four. The opening weekend showcased the talent and determination of the LCHS Equestrian Team, with several members delivering outstanding performances across various categories.

LCHS Equestrian Team’s Impressive Showing

Returning senior Elle Rohs made a Halloween-themed entrance, dressing her horse Freddie as Sven from “Frozen” while she portrayed Olaf. Rohs secured an impressive sixth place in the freshman class of Handy Hunters, competing against more than 50 riders. Caroline Crastz, another freshman, displayed her skill by securing fifth place in Equitation Over Fences and 11th place in Working Hunter.

Junior Jumper Varsity Success

Junior rider Kaylee Thornburgh showcased her talent in the Junior Jumper Varsity category, achieving third, fourth, and 12th place over the two-day competition. Riding her horse Fidelio, Thornburgh soared over jumps measuring 3 feet, 3 inches high, leaving a lasting impression on spectators and competitors alike.

Novice Class Triumphs

In the Novice Class, eighth grader Chloe Calix demonstrated her equestrian prowess by securing eighth place in Equitation Flat. Freshman Aditi Iyer also made her mark, achieving 12th place in Working Hunter. Additionally, eighth grader Evelin Wade showcased remarkable composure and determination in her first appearance at IEL.

Youngest Competitor Shines

Seventh grader Katelyn Holford represented LCHS in the Dressage category, impressing judges and spectators alike. Holford’s remarkable skill earned her second place in Training Level No. 3 Test in Show No. 1. In a playful nod to Halloween, she donned a Winnie the Pooh onesie and secured fourth place in Training Level No. 2 Test in Show No. 2.
